INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS THERAPY

Internal Family Systems Therapy in Los Angeles

Maybe part of you wants to rest while another part can't stop pushing. Or part of you wants connection while another keeps everyone at arm's length. IFS therapy helps you understand these parts of yourself with curiosity, not judgment.

WHAT IS IT?

What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

IFS is a compassionate framework that sees the mind as made up of different "parts." There's the part that protects you by staying busy, the part that carries old pain, and the part that's quick to criticize. None of these parts are the enemy. Each one developed to help you survive something.

THE PROCESS

How IFS Works

  • Getting to know your parts. Instead of fighting or suppressing them, you learn to understand what each part is trying to do for you.

  • Leading with compassion. You build a relationship with your parts from a place of curiosity and care, instead of shame or control.

  • Coming back to your core Self. IFS believes everyone has a calm, confident, compassionate center, even beneath the loudest or most protective parts.

  • Real change, not just insight. IFS can ease inner conflict and self-criticism, along with patterns that don't shift just from understanding them.

IFS is especially helpful for people-pleasing, perfectionism, harsh self-criticism, hyper-independence, and feeling torn between what you want and what you think you should do. It's also a gentle way to work with trauma and with coping patterns like substance use, because it treats these patterns as protectors rather than problems.

In session, we'll slow down and notice which parts are showing up, whether that's anxiety, a critical voice, or a part that shuts down. I'll guide you in getting to know them, so you can understand what they need and what they've been protecting.
