DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY

DBT Therapy in Los Angeles

When emotions hit hard, it can feel like they're in the driver's seat. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills help you create space between what you feel and how you react, so intense emotions become something you can move through.

WHAT IS IT?

What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy blends acceptance and change. It helps you build real skills for managing intense emotions, while learning to accept where you are right now without judgment. In our individual work together, I focus especially on two DBT skills: radical acceptance and mindfulness.

THE PROCESS

How DBT Works

  • Radical acceptance. You stop fighting reality as it is, even when it's painful. This isn't giving up. It's releasing the extra suffering that comes from resisting what's already true.

  • Mindfulness. You build your capacity to stay present with difficult emotions and sensations, instead of getting swept away or numbing out.

  • Space to respond. Together, these skills help you respond to emotions instead of being controlled by them.

DBT skills can help with emotional overwhelm, reactivity, anxiety, and the urge to numb out with substances, food, work, or other behaviors. They're also helpful if you tend to swing between feeling everything at once and feeling nothing at all.

DBT skills are woven into our individual sessions alongside other approaches. We'll practice skills in session and find ways to use them in your everyday life.
